About

TJ Staar

Guitarist, Vocalist, Keyboardist and Songwriter

TJ Staar grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has had a lifelong love of music.  Starting with the Beatles, the British Invasion and Motown in the 60's, through the Rock, Pop and Soul of the 70's, the Arena Rock and Hair Metal of the 80's, and the Jangle Pop and Grunge of the 90's.  All these influences are found in his music, both with the band Starfire and in his solo work.

TJ's first "band" was the one he formed in Kindergarden by using the large woodblocks to make a stage and recruiting his classmates to join him in making music.  He played Triangle.  In 4th grade, he was in "The Springfield 4" lip synching and dancing to the hits of The Osmonds and The Jackson Five.  He started playing drums at the age of 13, and soon after found that he liked guitar better.  Two years later he formed his first actual band ".44 Magnum".  A year after that, they merged their band with another and Starfire was formed.

Starfire was together for 10 years and produced 6 albums.  Starfire was unique at the time for having written and performed more original songs than anyone else in their area.  They played a mix of Hard Rock, Pop, Blues and Soul with everything from Metal to Ballads.  They also incorporated groove in most everything they played.

After Starfire, TJ continued writing and after a short hiatus, started playing again.  Going back to his roots and reflecting the times, he wrote more personal songs, utilizing lighter rhythms and more intricate melodies.  He is still playing his first guitar, the Starfield Les Paul that he bought when he was 15.

The first solo album, "Blazing Staar", is out now and is available wherever you find music.
